Week 3- Listening

Dear all,

Great to see you guys again. I hope you are clear with the Power Point slides on Listening Skills and you have enjoyed yourself during the music session we had on Thursday.

This week, please blog about the following issues regarding listening:-

1. Did your school teacher conduct listening activities during English lessons? If yes, state how often.
2. How did you find this week's listening activities? Was it difficult initially?
3. Did reading through the lyrics before listening helped you to fill in the blanks. How?

Happy blogging and all the best for your Test 1 (25/8/2011) ^^

  1. 1.No,because my school teacher urge us to finish syllabus first. But i feel that finishing the syllabus is a boring activities.

2.Yeah..great.Frankly I enjoy it.Yes it is,because it is difficult to understand their pronunciation through the music as the music might be too fast or too loud.
3.Yes exactly.. When Miss Jo asked us to read through the lyrics and understand it.It was quit easy for us to fill in the blank.I think most of us can guess the answer correctly except ME....:)

  2. No, because it was not in our SPM syllabus and my teacher did not have the time to conduct such activities. I did not think that it was difficult. I had great time and enjoying myself during that lesson. Yup, reading through the lyrics before listening to the songs did helped me. Hmmmm.... I was also been able to guess the answer...I guess maybe almost all of us EXCEPT DEVA could guess the RIGHT answer...(^^)

  3. 1. During English lessons in secondary school, we don't have listening activities because its like what Gaayethri said, listening is not in our syllabus. Further more, our teacher only emphasize more on the literature texts and essay writing.

    2. I really enjoyed this week's listening activities. Had a great time singing along with the songs. It's fun and relaxing. =) It wasn't really difficult thou there are some of the lyrics are not clearly heard. But still, it's interesting to have this kind of activity during our lessons.

    3. Well, I think yes, reading the lyrics before filling in the blanks do help a little in understanding the song and guess the words to fill into the blank, although I only guess a few correct. XD

  4. 1.My ex english teacher trained us on hearing in the listening part. She would speak out in front of the class and ask us to jot down what she had spoken.

2.I have no special feeling as I find that it is my responsibility to finish the task given by my lecturer.

3.Yes,but I cannot guess the answer to the blank.

  5. 1. No, it is because we had no time or chance to involve ourselves in such activities as we have other exam-based activities such as group discussion and presentation on certain topics which were predicted that it might appear in examination.
    2. It was very fun and enjoyable. At first, it was difficult as we didn’t go through the lyric.
    3. But in the second round, Ms. Jo let us to read through the lyric before we start the listening activity. By doing so, it gave us a rough figure about what would be the missing words in the lines.I really had my great time during this activity…….

  6. Hi Ms.Jo, hee sorry for the late comment =)

    1. erm...my English lesson class during the lower secondary did have Listening activities. But it's not really often cause many students complained that the teacher didn't finished up all the syllabus. For the upper secondary, I did not have any listening activities cause our main focus is on SPM, teachers and student as well did not have the interest to go for other interesting learning activities.

    2. For me, listening is not really difficult if the speaker doesn't use too much 'slang' and speak too fast. I was from a Chinese-educated environment, thus exposure to English speaking is very less. But I found I can listen and understand English after I practiced it, seems like i'd tuned my ears =)

    3. YUP, reading through the lyrics first made me trying to figure out what's about the song. When I tried to understand the lyrics, I find I can actually fill in the lyrics before I listened it. When the song played, I can catch the words even faster and precisely
